First discussions on the revised Waste Framework Directive

Last week, the very first debates on the revised Waste Framework Directive took place within the Council and the Parliament. Adopted by the Commission on 5 July 2023, the proposal sets out targets for the Member States to reduce food waste by 10 % by 2030 in processing and manufacturing, and by 30% (per capita) jointly at retail and consumption. To support the sustainable management of textile waste across the EU, the proposal introduces mandatory and harmonised Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes combined with specific provisions to tackle illegal shipments of textile waste to third countries.
