OPP Factsheet: Tackling microplastic pollution

In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in the amount of plastic waste released into the environment. Microplastics, which are particles smaller than 5 mm in size, pose a risk to ecosystems and human health as they do not break down or biodegrade harmlessly in the environment. This has led to the introduction of various regulations and policies by international organisations, national governments, and the European Union. The Commission is soon expected to announce a new legislative proposal to address the problem of microplastic pollution.
